About

Police Officer Ramon Suarez Memorial Foundation New York

My name is Carmen Suarez, widow of NYPD Police Officer Ramon Suarez, Transit District 4. On Tuesday September 11, 2001, my husband was stationed at the Delancey Street subway station when he heard over the radio that the Twin Towers were hit. He and his partners left their post, rushed to the streets, hailed a cab and went to help at what we now refer to as the blackest Tuesday in our Nation’s history. Ray was always willing to help anyone in need. His selflessness symbolized the essence of what a true American hero is. On that Black Tuesday, he did what he loved most… helping people and saving lives.

As Ray’s life was focused on purpose, his paramount concern was protecting people, especially children. Four years after loosing Ray, I received a phone call requesting permission to name a school after him. To say that I was overwhelmed with emotion is an understatement.

Ray was always an advocate for education and believed that a well-educated child is the beginning of the foundation to their life. He always said that you are never too old to continue learning and enhancing your education. Those same values he taught to his children, Sophia, Ramon, Jr. and Jillian. Our mission embodies the true spirit of Ray.

A Legacy of Service:
Carmen Suarez

The foundation was started in the same spirit of Ray’s commitment to community service. Our mission as a foundation is to help others the way Ray always did. We plan to provide two scholarship awards each academic year to two children that attend the school in his name: P.S. 239, the Police Officer Ramon Suarez School, located in Ridgewood Queens (the “School”).

PO Ramon Suarez Foundation Mission

My name is Carmen Suarez, my husband Police Officer Ramon Suarez was killed on September 11, 2001 when the World Trade Center was attacked and the towers collapsed. Ramon, or Ray as he was known to friends and family, demonstrated all of the best qualities of humankind, he was selfless, generous, brave and a hero who saved many people by leading them to safety before he was killed.

Ray’s life was focused on purpose, and his paramount concern was protecting people, especially children. Four years after losing Ray, I received a phone call requesting permission to name Public School 239 – The Police Officer Ramon Suarez School.

After being invited to events and celebrations at the school I met many students who deserved to be rewarded for their accomplishments and determination to strive for excellance, which led me to establish the Police Officer Ramon Suarez Memorial Foundation. This Foundation will preserve the legacy of my husband and keep his memory alive for years to come.

Our mission embodies the spirit of Ray, giving back to the children of the communities he served and his fellow officers that continue to serve. The Police Officer Ramon Suarez Memorial Foundation is prepared to assist two families yearly with educational scholarships. Students will be chosen by the school administration and submitted to the Foundation Board for approval. Scholarships can be utilized for college, trade school or private high school tuition. Along with seeking other avenues to promote and support worthy collaborative community sevices working alongside with our law enforcement.

We look forward to working with everyone and hope you will join us in this journey to preserve the legacy of Police Officer Ramon Suarez.
